How to compress a PDF to 100 KB

  1. Choose or drop your PDF.
  2. Check the target: 100 KB is already filled in. Change it if your form allows a different size.
  3. Click Compress PDF. Paperwing tries the lightest settings first and tells you the final size.
  4. Download the PDF and upload it to your form.

Why 100 KB?

Many application portals for jobs, exams, visas and government services accept documents only up to 100 KB, sometimes per file. Scans from phones and office scanners are often 1–10 MB, so they need to shrink by 90% or more.

How Paperwing gets there

It first resamples the images inside the PDF while keeping text as text. Only if that isn’t enough does it redraw the pages as compact images, stepping down the resolution until the file fits. In our tests a 9.9 MB four-page report full of photos reached 85 KB with its text still selectable, and a 13.9 MB five-page phone scan reached 74 KB without being redrawn.

If it still won’t fit

  • Convert colour scans with Grayscale PDF first: grey images are much smaller.
  • Remove pages the form doesn’t need with Remove pages.
  • Upload one document per field instead of combining several.
  • Rescan at 150–200 dpi in black and white instead of a colour photo.

Frequently asked questions

Will my document still be readable at 100 KB?

For one or two pages of text, yes. Long scanned documents may need to become lower-resolution images to fit, which can make small print soft; check it before uploading.

Is 100 KB the same as 0.1 MB?

Almost: 100 KB is about 0.098 MB. Paperwing aims under the number you type, so the file is accepted either way.

Is it safe for ID cards and certificates?

Yes. Compression runs in your browser, so the document is never uploaded.
