ISO 14001 gap analysis
An ISO 14001 gap analysis checks your environmental management system (EMS) against the standard, from environmental aspects and compliance obligations to emergency preparedness and performance evaluation.
01What ISO 14001 covers
ISO 14001 helps organisations manage their environmental responsibilities: identify environmental aspects and impacts, meet compliance obligations, set objectives, control operations, prepare for emergencies and improve performance. It uses the same clause 4–10 structure as other management standards, so it combines well with ISO 9001 and ISO 45001.
ISO 14001:2026 was published in April 2026, with more weight on measurable environmental performance and on issues such as climate change, biodiversity and resource use. Certified organisations have a transition period, expected to be three years; your certification body will confirm the date. The tool follows the 2026 clauses.
02How to run the gap analysis
- Define the EMS scope, including sites and activities.
- Review your register of environmental aspects and how significance is decided.
- Check your compliance obligations register and evaluation of compliance.
- Rate each clause with evidence and record gaps.
- Plan corrective actions and re-assess.
03Common gaps
- 6.1.2: aspects identified without a life-cycle perspective.
- 6.1.3: compliance obligations not linked to aspects.
- 8.2: emergency scenarios not tested.
- 9.1.2: evaluation of compliance not done or not recorded.
